FAQs

Do I Need To Be An Artist?

There is no need to have previous artistic/creative experiences or skills in order to benefit from art therapy.

This is because we don’t make art for aesthetic reasons. Instead, we make art for the sake of processing and expressing thoughts, emotions, and whatever else you feel you need to explore!

Also, if you don’t like to work with paint or other visual arts materials, no worries. Creative expression can come from multiple different outlets (such as writing, photography, play, video games, and so on).

Do I Attend My Child’s Sessions?

As a parent or guardian, you will attend their initial intake session to help set goals, fill forms, and understand consent/confidentiality. After that however, your child will be dropped off for one-on-one time with me moving forward.

Don’t worry, you won’t be kept entirely out of the loop! I offer 1:1 check-in sessions with parents/guardians. These sessions help us stay on top of working as a teammate for your child, as we discuss how things are going for your child and ways in which we could better support them in-session and outside of session! It should be noted that I cannot tell you directly what has happened in session due to confidentiality for your child, and that they will know we are meeting to discuss things that were pre-approved by them!

Can I Have 1:1 Sessions Covered By Insurance?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy, which is not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health care benefits do provide coverage for psychotherapy. Your insurance provider can help you determine the coverage with your plan. Since I am a qualifying registered psychotherapist, you would need to ask your insurance provider the following:

“Does my insurance plan cover services provided to me by a Qualifying Registered Psychotherapist who is receiving supervision from another regulated professional in psychotherapy, as per the guidelines of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario?”
